ViBe Creative District Hosts Public in Creative Crosswalk Painting

August 7, 2017

The ViBe Creative District nonprofit announced today that the public is welcome to participate in a creative crosswalk painting event this Second Saturday, August 12th from 9am-noon at the intersection of 19th Street and Mediterranean Avenue in Virginia Beach. This chosen location was selected as it will the 4th corner of one whole block to have creative crosswalks completed in the ViBe. These public artworks create a sense of place and arrival within the arts district. This will be the fourth artist-led community-painted creative crosswalk in the ViBe Creative District; all have been sponsored by grants from the Office of Cultural Affairs and the Business Consortium for Arts Support. Additional activities will take place along 19th Street with the Old Beach Farmer’s Market, Art Market and Green Markets happening the same morning.

The artist will sketch the design onto the pavement at 19th Street and Mediterranean from 7:30-9am on Saturday and the public is welcome to assist the artist in painting the design onto the pavement between the hours of 9am-noon. Finally, the artist will have from 12-1pm for touch ups and drying time from 1-4pm. The intersection of 19th Street and Mediterranean will remain open to 19th Street Traffic; only a small portion of Mediterranean Avenue will be closed from 7:30am-5pm to allow for painting of the artwork on the Mediterranean crosswalk (located directly in front of Java Surf).

Local Teen Artist Ava Borte
The winning artist, Ava Borte of Virginia Beach, VA., was selected after an open call to teen artists in July 2017. Borte’s design will be completed in black and white traffic paint, working within and emphasizing the white ladder rail of the existing crosswalk. Ava Borte designed and fabricated multiple neon art pieces for the façade of The Governor's School For The Arts building, where she is a senior, in effort to bring the Neon District further down Granby Street in Norfolk. She looks forward to the opportunity to carry her public art involvement into the Vibe District in Virginia Beach.

The teen artist has had artwork in over a dozen local exhibitions:
